UGH! Tis’ the season for coughing and congestion! One of the biggest hurdles my clients face during these winter months is trying to escape cold and flu season unscathed. Sometimes no matter how much you wash your hands, how hydrated you stay or how much vitamin C you gobble up you still end up sick, and the last thing you want to do is let that derail your fitness and nutrition progress.
I share with you what the experts suggest as well as my gathered advice from friends as to what they take to alleviate their cold and flu systems and help speed up the process of getting better!
Should I workout when I am sick?
First and foremost you should listen closely to your body, you know yourself best. Is it just a case of the sniffles or are you struggling to get out of bed? If it is the latter and you are running a fever or are achy with chills, contact your doctor for his or her advice on the subject.
Here’s one suggested way on how to decide if you hit the snooze for some extra zzzz or lace up! Ask yourself are your symptoms above or below the neck?
If they are above the neck, you are congested, or even have a sore throat doctors recommend you proceed with caution, a light to moderate workout is OK, dialing it back a bit on the intensity.
If symptoms are below the neck, coughing, or you are feeling nauseous, vomiting, or you have a fever that comes with aches and pains you should back off, get some rest and let yourself recover. At this point you will only make things worse!
Speed up your Recovery!
So what can you do to speed up the process? Here are 3 TIPS that could help, but ultimately you are going to have to be patient, and let your body do the work to heal itself. With that being said these things could assist your body in getting the job done!
1. SLEEP: your body needs some serious rest in order for it to fight the infection. Make sure that you get your SLEEP. The occasional movie or reading if you can is OK, but don’t stay up into the night glaring at the TV or your IPAD, shut it down and get some shut eye!
2. HYDRATE: Your body needs plenty of fluids. Make sure you are chugging your water that is your best option, but also drinking herbal tea with honey can soothe your throat. I like to add a little squeeze of honey as well!
3. EAT HEALTHY FOODS: this is no time to stray from your goals on fueling yourself with good nutrition. Make sure you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. You may not have your usual appetite but eating small meals or snacks throughout the day will greatly help your progress. Foods rich in antioxidants and full of vitamins will help boost your immune system!
